Chasing Drums

When I was about 13 years old, I went on a month long camping trip with my aunt, uncle and cousin. One night, while we were in Wyoming, I had walked away from camp to the restroom and when I came out, I stopped to look up at the sky and appreciate the night.

That is when I heard music. It was faint but I could hear that it was Native American flutes and drums. The music was coming from the opposite direction of the camp sites and I was curious about where it was coming from so I followed the melody.

Before I knew it I was running through the forest for fear that the music would stop before I could find its source. then I came to this clearing in the woods where the moonlight could finally show through, but the music had stopped. I looked all around the clearing, and all I could see was a section of the Tounge River and a large boulder. There were no people or instruments anywhere.

The memory of seeing the trees go past me as I ran is the image that I chose because it makes me think of that driving force in us all to complete a task. When I remember this small story, it makes me think of how important a journey can be for us all, even if our original goal is not met the way we expected.
